Introduction

Facial hyper functional lines are a fact of life. They slowly begin to appear as we age, and they most commonly appear on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth, and in between the eyes. Until recently, the best way to treat these lines was with plastic surgery, chemical peels or collagen injections. But now, these lines can disappear with Botox® Injections.

How Facial Lines Form

Facial lines begin to occur as a result of the facial expression we make, such as smiling, laughing, and frowning. The repetition that the underlying muscles perform when going through these emotions as well as age-induced changes in the collagen of the dermis causes these lines to form. When the lines become excessively prominent, they may often be interpreted as anger, anxiety, fatigue, fear, or melancholia.

History of Botox®

Since the turn of the century, people have heard about the effects of botulism caused by the botulinum toxin. However, a doctor by the name of Scott Allen found that a purified neurotoxin complex was therapeutically valuable for many ophthalmologic disorders, such as lazy eye and muscle spasms. The ophthalmologists performing the procedures with Botox® also noticed that their patients had cosmetic benefits from where they were injected. Neurologists discovered that Botox® was therapeutically useful because it relieved abnormal muscle tension.

Dr. Fatma Gül has performed over one thousand therapeutic procedures for rehabilitation using Botox®. Patients who have had a stroke or have been in a car accident, as well as children suffering from cerebral palsy, have greatly benefited from Botox®.

How Botox® Works

When injected into the muscle, Botox® temporarily prohibits the muscle from contracting. In other words, the muscle is temporarily paralyzed and prohibits you from making the expressions that cause facial lines to form. Botox® can be injected to treat forehead lines, smile lines around the eyes (“crow’s feet”), frown lines, and more recently, around the mouth, which are called “paper cut” lines.

There are many advantages of Botox® injections for treating facial lines. First of all, it is not a permanent procedure. The results can last between 3 to 6 months. With time you will forget, or unlearn, to make the excessive facial expressions which causes the lines to form. Second, since your muscles are being trained, the more Botox® injections you have, the longer the results will last. In time the injections may last 8 months or longer. Another advantage to Botox® is that there are no incisions and no scarring. These injections are perfect for someone who wants to see the benefits of plastic surgery , but not the complications that come with it.

What to Expect

The procedure itself is relatively painless. However, the tighter your muscles are, the more painful the injections can be. Immediately after you receive the Botox® injections, you will notice red marks where the needle was injected into the muscle. These marks will disappear within a few hours.

After 2 to 3 days, you may notice some of the lines disappearing. However, the full effect of the injections will be seen 2 to 3 weeks after the injection. In some cases, one injection may not be enough to eliminate the deeper lines, but the lines will become smoother and less noticeable. Subsequent injections will eventually begin to eliminate deep lines

Side Effects

There have been no significant side effects of Botox® injections reported. Botox® is considered a very safe and effective procedure.
