Until recently there has never been an effective, non-invasive medical procedure to eliminate spider veins, varicose veins, and benign pigmented lesions. The most common procedure for spider and varicose veins has been sclerotherapy where saline is injected into the vein. However, this method has been known to be painful and less effective for spider veins. Lightening creams and serums have been the most common treatment for pigmented spots and lesions, however these products take too long to be effective. The PhotoDerm^® and VascuLight™ Systems both use pulsed light therapy to rid the skin of these problems.

Spider and Varicose Veins

Spider and varicose veins are a common problem among men and women and are most likely to appear on the legs and face. The PhotoDerm^® and VascuLight™ Systems both use an intense pulsed light to effectively remove unwanted veins based on the principles of photo-epilation. The system emits a pulse of light which penetrates the skin down to the vein. The light is then absorbed by the pigment or by the blood, raising the temperature of the vein without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Both spider and varicose veins need between 2 and 4 treatments. However, darkly pigmented (or purple) veins may require more sessions because they are deeper under the skin and are harder to penetrate. Each treatment generally lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

Pigmented Lesions

The PhotoDerm^® System can also eliminate age spots, sun spots, freckles, birthmarks, port wine stains, hyper pigmentation, tattoos, and other benign pigmented lesions. PhotoDerm^® safely reduces melanin, the dark pigment in the skin, so that pigmented lesions fade and slowly disappear.

The patented technology used by the PhotoDerm^® System allows the doctor to customize the treatment specifically for your skin type and blemish. This cannot be achieved with any laser or other non-invasive method currently available.

Freckles, age spots and sun spots may clear after one session. Other blemishes, including port wine stains and tattoos, may require several sessions. Each session generally lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

Pre- and Post-Treatment Activities

Two to three weeks before and after you have your PhotoDerm^® and VascuLight™ treatments performed, do not go out into the sun, or use tanning booths or tanning creams

After your treatment for both spider and varicose veins and pigmented lesions, you may return to work and resume all regular activities.

You may experience some discomfort after the treatment due to some burning and/or blistering, but this should not hinder your normal activities. You should limit your exposure to the sun as much as possible. If it is necessary that you go out into the sun, make sure you use a sunscreen with a high SPF (between 30 and 40).
